WITNESS THE MIRACLES OF GOD
(Jn 6:1-15) The disciples faced an almost impossible problem when Jesus asked Philip: ‘Where shall we buy bread, that these people may eat?’ (Jn 6:5). There were five thousand people, and they must have needed a lot of bread. ‘Two hundred denarii worth of bread would not be enough for these people, even if each of them had a small piece.’ (Jn 6:7). Two hundred denarii! Imagine, a day's labour at that time was one denarius (cf. Mt 20:9). They did not have that much money. Amidst the confusion, Andrew offered a ‘strange solution’ that even he himself doubted. ‘Here is a child who has five barley loaves and two fish; but what does that tell us about this crowd?’ (Jn 6:9). Still, Jesus heard their discussion, ‘agreed’ on what they could provide, and then made them witness a miracle: ‘Then Jesus took the loaves, gave thanks, and distributed them to those who were sitting there; and he also made with the fish as many as they wanted.’ (Jn 6:9).
