WITNESS THE MIRACLES OF GOD
(Jn 6:1-15)
The disciples faced an
almost impossible problem when Jesus asked Philip: ‘Where shall we buy bread,
that these people may eat?’ (Jn 6:5). There were five thousand people, and they
must have needed a lot of bread. ‘Two hundred denarii worth of bread would not
be enough for these people, even if each of them had a small piece.’ (Jn 6:7).
Two hundred denarii! Imagine, a day's labour at that time was one denarius (cf.
Mt 20:9). They did not have that much money.
Amidst the confusion, Andrew
offered a ‘strange solution’ that even he himself doubted. ‘Here is a child who
has five barley loaves and two fish; but what does that tell us about this
crowd?’ (Jn 6:9).
Still, Jesus heard their
discussion, ‘agreed’ on what they could provide, and then made them witness a
miracle: ‘Then Jesus took the loaves, gave thanks, and distributed them to
those who were sitting there; and he also made with the fish as many as they
wanted.’ (Jn 6:9).
Jesus taught the disciples, and
us, how to see and experience the miracles of the LORD. The disciples were
invited to be truly involved in ‘impossible’ and ‘disturbing’ situations to be
as involved as possible in resolving them. They are not just ‘watching the LORD
work’, but must be brave enough to ‘get hungry’, ‘look with caring eyes like
the LORD’, and ‘move to solve the problem’.
To be able to see the LORD's
miracles, we can learn from the disciples. The marvellous works of the LORD can
only be seen by those who truly love their calling in life. Truly love their calling in life, means:
1) dare
to be invited by the LORD to ‘go hungry’. How many times have we listened and
been present in the problems of our loved ones, or our people? Being present
and listening, meaning, without judging, without accusing, but joining the
‘hunger’ of those who come to us because they are ‘flocking to seek the LORD’.
2) Dare
to see with ‘caring eyes of the LORD’, and do what we can. Caring is the key to
seeing the LORD. Only caring people can truly pray, because they will surely
have cried and will act as quickly as possible and as much as they can.
So, what we can do at that time,
do it, even if it is small and simple. That act of care may only be the size of
‘five barley loaves and two fish’, but in it, we bring a willingness to ‘share
in the hunger’, then pray together for the LORD's help. Next, what we see is
‘the work of the LORD’. The LORD went ahead and made everything a miracle.
When your small works are in the
perfection of the LORD's blessings for others, that's when you see His
miracles.
